Working towards the CO2-neutral label

At Van Heurck, we carry our Corporate Social Responsibility Policy in our DNA. We focus on 5 pillars in order to make the textile industry a more sustainable place. In this blog post, we’ll tell you all about our efforts to become CO2-neutral and we’ll show you our progress so far.

CO2-neutrality: a goal worth fighting for

The world needs our help and, as a company that is active across the globe, we know it’s our responsibility to step up and do our part. Becoming CO2-neutral is an important goal we strive for, so we can lower our impact on the environment. We do this by focusing on 2 pillars:

  1. Our direct carbon emissions: company cars, commuting, waste…
  2. Our indirect carbon emissions: primarily the use of energy.

In order to keep everyone motivated and on the same page, an independent party reviews our efforts.

How we focus on sustainability

The lockdowns had a noticeable effect on our overall emissions (a reduction of CO2 emission by almost 20.0% between 2019 and 2020). But that doesn’t mean that we’re done working towards CO2-neutrality. We are now fully up and running again, so that means we have to work hard in order to keep our emissions at an absolute minimum.

That is why we focus on sustainability in our own house by:

  • Reducing CO2-emissions per employee as much as we can;
  • Switching to green modes of transportation (public transport, electric cars, electric bikes…);
  • Updating our facilities, moving to a more sustainable office/factory;
  • Inspiring our employees to take initiative;
  • Developing new products using recycled materials, biologically produced materials and alternatives to cotton such as Lyocel

Of course, we will also continue to monitor the impact of our efforts and change our approach when necessary.

Sustainable development investments

We do not just care about our ecological legacy, but our social legacy, too. That is why we compensate our CO2-emissions by investing in a sustainable development project for clean water in Rwanda (Nyagatara region).

This projects aims to provide safe (drinking) water for numerous households in the Nyagatara region. The borehole technology of this project doesn’t just provide safe water, though. It also reduces erosion, loss of nutrition, disease occurrence (from drinking polluted water) and greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to that, the project provides local training and employment to maintain the boreholes.
