PPE is divided into three categories, 3 being the one with the strictest requirements. That’s because wearers of category 3 clothing need protection from risks that could cause irreversible damage to their health or that could even be fatal.
Given that this is the strictest category, it’s also subjected to the most rigorous tests. All of the clothing must be tested by a registered body in order to get the EU’s stamp of approval. After about 20 tests that focus on 4 key values (flame, radiation, waterproofing and breathability), the clothing that meets the standards is given the CE mark. That’s what you need to look out for.
Firefighter gear consists of several protective layers or one very thick layer providing thermal insulation. The wearer should be protected at all times, and the strength of the materials cannot diminish after being exposed to heat for an extended period of time. They also shouldn’t be able to be cut or torn.
